Statement of Faith and Doctrine
Calvary Baptist Church Emporia, KS
THE BIBLE: We believe in the authority and sufficiency of the Holy Bible, consisting of the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, as originally written. We believe that the Scriptures were inspired by the Holy Spirit and therefore is infallible and inerrant in all matters of which it speaks. II Tim. 3:16,17; II Peter 1:19-21; Isaiah 40:8; Psalm 119:89,160; John 17:17; Prov. 30: 5,6; Psalm 19:7. We are an independent Baptist church and rely on the authority of God’s Word, the Holy Bible. It is our practice to use the King James Version of the Bible in all church services. Eph. 4:1-3; Rev. 22:18,19
ONE TRUE GOD: We believe there is one and only one living and true God, an infinite Spirit, the Maker and supreme Ruler of Heaven and Earth; inexpressibly glorious in holiness, and worthy of all possible honor, confidence and love; that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, equal in every divine perfection, and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption. Exod. 20:2,3; I Cor. 8:6; Rev. 4:11; John 3:16
A. We believe in God the Father, perfect in holiness, infinite in wisdom,
limitless in power. We believe that it is by His grace and love that He
provided salvation for lost mankind who will believe on His Son as
Savior.
B. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus Christ has always
existed as God and that in the fullness of time He was born of the
Virgin Mary, being conceived by the Holy Spirit. Having become
incarnate, He retained His deity. We believe in the sinless perfection
of Christ, which rendered His substitutionary death acceptable to the
Father. We also believe that He rose physically from the grave and
that He ascended to the Father where He is now interceding for His
saints and will be their judge at the rapture. We believe that Christ
will physically return to the earth and reign in His millennial kingdom
after which He will judge the unsaved at the Great White Throne
Judgment. Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:18-25; John 1:1-3, 14; 5:22; Acts 1:10-
12; Rom. 14:10; I Cor. 15:3,4; Phil.2:5-ll; Col. 1:1-3,1:16,17; 2:9; Heb. 7:25,26; Rev. 20:6,11-15.
C. We believe in the Holy Spirit. We believe that the Holy Spirit is a
divine person, equal with God the Father and God the Son and of the
same nature; that He was active in the creation; that in His relation to
the unbelieving world He restrains the evil one until God’s purpose is
fulfilled; that He convicts of sin, of righteousness and of judgment;
that He bears witness to the truth of the gospel in preaching and
testimony; that He is the Agent in the new birth and at the moment of
salvation He baptizes or places the believer into the body of Christ;
that He seals, endues, guides, teaches, witnesses, sanctifies and helps
the believer. We also believe that the Spirit given gifts of speaking in
tongues, special healings and prophecy were “sign gifts” to the Jewish
nation until the Scriptures were completed. These gifts ceased at that time and are not operative today. Gen. 1:1-3; Matt. 28:19; Luke 1:35;
John 3:5,6; John 14: 16-17, 26; John 16:8-11; Acts 5:30-32; 11:16;
Rom. 8:14,16,26,27; I Cor. 12:13; 13:8-12; Eph 1:13,14; 4:30;
5:18,19; Heb. 9:14
SIN, SALVATION, SANCTIFICATION and SECURITY : We believe the Genesis account of creation as a literal, Scriptural account of the direct, immediate acts of God in which He created the world in six, twenty-four hour, consecutive days and rested on the seventh or Sabbath day; Gen. 1 & 2; Exo. 20:11; 31:17; Psa. 33:6; John 1:3; Col. 1:16,17.
We believe that mankind has sinned and rebelled against God beginning with Adam and that we are all sinners by nature. Gen. 1:26,27; Gen. 3; Psa. 51:5; Rom. 1:18,20,28,32; 3:10-19,23; 5:12-19.
We believe that God has provided the way for sinful mankind to be fully redeemed by His grace through faith in the sacrificial death and blood atonement of Jesus Christ. Sinners that believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive His free gift of grace are born again, saved and secured eternally. John 3:3,6-7, 16,36; Acts 15:11; 16:30-32; Rom. 3:10, 23-25; 6:23; I Cor. 15:1-4; II Cor. 5:17-21; Eph. 1:7; 2:1, 5, 8-10; Phil. 2:5-8; Col. 2:13-15; Titus 3:5,6; I Peter 2:21-24; I John 2:2; 4:10; John 1:12; 10:28,29; Rom. 8:35-39; I Cor. 12:13; Eph. 1:13,14; Phil. 1:6; I Peter 1:3-5; I John 5:11-13; Jude 1.
We believe the born again believer lives the Christian life by submitting and yielding to the power of the Holy Spirit and the principles found in the Bible. This is a life long process of sanctification and separation from the world, the sin nature and wickedness of the devil. John 17:17; I Cor. 1:30; II Cor. 3:18; 6:14-7:1; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:25-32; 1 Thes. 4:3,4; 5:21-23; II Thes. 3:6,7; I Tim. 6:3-5; I Peter 1:14-16; I John 1:15-17; 3:2,3; II John 9-11.
We believe that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will return in the air before the beginning of the Tribulation Period. This is an event which can occur at any moment and will result in all born again believers being caught up to meet Him in the air. 1 Cor. 15:51-54; I Thes. 4:13-18; Titus 2:13; I John 3:1-3.
The Tribulation Period: We believe that the Tribulation is a literal seven year period which follows the Rapture or catching away of the church. It will be a time of great deception, trouble and judgment on the earth and will culminate by the revelation of Christ in power and great glory to sit upon the throne of David and to establish His millennial reign. Isa. 9:6,7; 11:1-9; Dan. 9:24-27; Zech. 14:1-5; Matt. 24:29-31; Acts 2:29,30; Rev. 19:11-16.
We believe the Bible teaches a radical and essential difference between the righteous and the wicked. Only those who are justified by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ are truly righteous in God’s eyes. We believe the righteous will spend eternity with Christ. The unrighteous are those who continue in unbelief and un-confessed sin and therefore are wicked in God’s sight. These, we believe, shall experience the everlasting conscious suffering of the lost in the Lake of Fire. Prov. 14:32; Malachi 3:18; Matt. 25:34-41; Luke 16:25; Rom. 6:17,18; Rev. 20:14,15; John 3:36.
